NIWE History

NIWE was established as the Northern Initiative on Women and Eating in 1988 in response to women asking for support because of problems around food, such as not being able to eat; eating and getting rid of food; compulsively eating; and other issues. NIWE became a charitable company limited by guarantee in 2012 and is now formally known as NIWE Eating Distress Service. We have developed our services in response to the needs of the women we have worked with, their carers and our local community. Whilst the majority of those who contact us are women, we recognise the needs of men with eating distress and our counselling service is available to men aged 16+.
